Filipinos ready to spike interest in airport court glory

Filipino volleyball is gearing up for another season. 

The Philippine Volleyball Club will host the opener for its 2014 Fun League Sunday, Feb. 16. The Airport Park volleyball courts in George Town will serve as venue from 5 p.m. and include the annual parade of participating teams. Debby Pie, club secretary, said there are a number of teams gearing up for the competition, sponsored by Corona Extra.  

“Our club organizes an outdoor volleyball fun league for men’s and women’s divisions, which is sanctioned by the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation,” Pie said. “The games will be every Sunday and Wednesday night. In the men’s division, the teams are D’ Defenders, MC Tamaraws, Blue Iguana, Tau Gamma Phi, Turtle Guardians, PDL Hitmen, All-In Bluffers and First Baptist Church. The women’s division has Agave Grill X-tremes, Keep Calm and Drink Pepsi, Hinampak (sponsored by Al La Kebab) and Carlos and Martin’s.” 

For this Sunday’s opener, both divisions will be in action. On the ladies side, Hinampak takes on Keep Calm and Carlos and Martin’s faces Agave Grill. On the men’s side, Blue Iguana challenges Bluffers, Defenders battle Guardians, First Baptist goes toe-to-toe with Tau and Tamaraws go to war with Hitmen. 


The league’s opening ceremony usually sees a colorful parade of teams.
