Rush hour flip out

A Wednesday morning rush hour crash looked bad, but the driver walked away with just a few cuts and bruises.

According to police, a Jeep Wrangler with a lone occupant slid off the Esterley Tibbetts Highway around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after coming off the roundabout near the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

No other vehicles were involved.

The driver blamed the crash on slippery conditions from the recent rainfall.

  1. Just wanted to state that the problem is not speed @ the roundabout behind the Ritz… It is the fact that it is the worst designed engineered roundabout I’ve ever seen.. The camber of the road is like that of an overturned saucer so the road itself forces you into the barrier, whereas it should be the other way round – higher on the outside than on the inside! The entrance from the South is also offset to the right which forces traffic to cross the lane or risk hitting the curb on the insude! There is a crash a day on this roundabout after rainfall! The road surface gets slick due to the discharge of exhaust fumes and oil when downchanging gear which builds up over time – the next rainfall sits on the top like black-ice so going 10mph around it becomes a struggle God help those on 2 wheels! The answer – dig it up and redo it not put more barriers around it! If it had been done correctly in the first place (instead of cheaply, trying to avoid having to put drainage @ the centre) there would be no issues! Sorry – rant over! ;o)

  2. Previous poster is absolutely correct. I’ve gone off this roundabout is an AWD vehicle before they put the barriers up because they were watering the grass in the middle and it caused the entire west side to be wet from spray. Long story short, when you go from dry pavement to wet on the downhill slope of a turn, bad things happen. Luckily I caught my slide at the right moment and didn’t flip and my vehicle just drove straight over the edge.

And the offset coming from the south does pretty much force you to cut across lanes and make an exaggerated angle in your turn which causes more accidents.
