Softball enthusiasts are set for another challenge on the diamond
The Cayman Islands Softball Association is starting its 2014 fast-pitch league this weekend at the Field of Dreams. The men’s division sees its season opener on March 23 from 2:30 p.m. and the women’s segment begins March 22 at 6:30 p.m.
Lori Moncrieffe serves as association vice president and previously said residents are encouraged to give the sport a try as a means of stress relief.
“Softball is a great sport that tests not only your physical ability, but also your mental ability,” Moncrieffe said. “It is a very good way to relieve stress because it requires you to focus in the game and, of course, you get to take out aggression on the softball.”
Moncrieffe is a fixture in the sport and helped the Cayman Auto Diagnostic Clinic Stingers earn their second straight national women’s title in 2013. The Stingers beat Cayman National Bank Team Xtreme in three games in the best-of-three finals. Jessica Pawlik, Stephanie Watler and Krystal Arch starred for CADC while Team Xtreme relied on Carneth Thomas, Molly-Ann Moore and Daneliz Thomas.
On the men’s side, the Redimix Patriots claimed their third straight championship. Redimix beat Jose’s Escape Pirates in five games in last year’s best-of-five championship series at the West Bay softball field, next to the Jimmy Powell Cricket Oval. The Patriots relied on Bradimir Robinson, Mark Chow and Michael Carey while the Pirates leaned on Byron Bravo, Rodolfo Whitaker and Mel Omier.
