Stamma keeps Wanderers happy

There were goals galore in the Heineken Sunday League at the weekend with three out of the four games producing six goals.

Shellaz has been near the bottom of the table for most of the season, and with only 13 scored had a problem. So it was a major surprise that they beat Luca 5-1 at the TE McField Annex.

Leon Bennett got the opener for Shellaz after five minutes. Raggilow Blake and Gavin Reynolds made it 3-0 by half-time.

Player-coach Matthew Owens then hit a double, the first, a fine header from a corner kick on 53 minutes. His second was a more routine finish in the last minute. Luca’s strike came from Luigi Aiello.

The second match at the TE McField Annex was between the top two sides, Fidel Wanderers and Maples Revolution.

Table toppers Wanderers scored after 11 minutes through winger Ricky Parsons.

Maples equalized 10 minutes later when a mixup in the Wanderers defense gifted Matt Fong for his fifth of the season.

After the restart, Dennis Lee hit a great curling shot for Maples to put them ahead.

Wanderers fought back and equalized when league top scorer Kiegel “Stamma” Atkinson spun to fire the ball high into the top corner from close range. Revolution capitalized on a contentious pass-back decision when Ben Hooper fired through a forest of players from the resulting indirect free kick to put Maples 3-2 up.

Wanderers retained their unbeaten league record when Atkinson emerged as a hero again to fire home his 22nd of the season for a 3-3 draw.

CML Claymores played Harry’s at Ed Bush and that too ended 3-3. The Claymores raced to a two-goal lead inside 25 minutes when goal machine James Cooper scored for the fourth consecutive week on eight minutes and Baron Solomon soon made it 2-0.

Harry’s hit back with a quick-fire double inside five minutes through Ric Agerlla and Mark Soto.

Into the second-half and CML quickly retook the lead when Stefan Kormos got his season’s seventh.

With just two minutes remaining, Harry’s defender Richard Crozier was left unmarked and he punished the sloppy defending by scoring a last-gasp equalizer.

The last game of the weekend was between Boca Juniors and Fidel’s Old Boys at Ed Bush in West Bay.

After a fairly even, scoreless first-half, the Old Boys hit two unanswered goals.

Striker Ryan Nugent scored in the 53rd minute and 15 minutes later Jose Emmanuel Valenciano fired home his first for Old Boys to make it 2-0.

This weekend at the TE McField Annex, Shellaz wants to maintain their good form against Harry’s, while the Claymores host Luca.

At Ed Bush, Boca Juniors face Fidel Wanderers and Old Boys want another surprise win, against Maples Revolution.
