Digicel served up a large defeat to Burger King on the diamond.
The Pony League sluggers, part of the 2014 Little League season put on by the Cayman Islands Little League Association, put on a memorable showing.
Digicel beat Burger King, 12-7, in one of the more spirited matches this month at the Field of Dreams. Digicel took the field in the first inning, with their defensive play tested by a slew of well-hit balls by Burger King batters Malakai, Cameron and Nicolai Christian.
Amari Myrie was busy as pitcher and managed to stop a few grounders that could have been big hits for Burger King. Digicel took to the field determined to outdo the hits by Burger King and delivered a series of home runs by Toby Johns, Michael Smith and Nicholas Franklin. The inning was capped off by a solid connection by Leah White that brought in two runners, to close the inning 3-6. Burger King was determined to close the gap in the second inning, as Malakai and Cameron Christian once again made it through Digicel’s tough fielding. Nicolai Christian hit a home run, to bring them all home.
Jackson also hit a nice grounder and managed to bring Cameron home, bringing Burger King’s runs up to seven. Down by just one run, Digicel came out swinging just as hard as before, with Justin Parsons, Tobby, Michael and Nicolas all advancing through their bases and Charlie Gilman landing a sweet home run just in time for a grand slam.
Burger King’s first baseman also made a good stop at first, outing Reese Atterbury just before she got to the plate. To the delight of parents and fans, the inning (and game) closed with a dramatic play: Ian Hemmings nailed a solid hit almost to the fence but Cameron Christian of Burger King had a surprise, running from the outfield to tag him just before he made it to the home plate.
