Sticks will be clashing again

The Cayman Islands Field Hockey Club is preparing to tackle two international teams this month.

The club hosts a number of teams from Jamaica and England on May 24 and 25 in their fourth annual international tournament at Camana Bay’s sports field.

Hotly anticipated matches will take place between the men’s and ladies teams, plus mixed events and an exhibition match played by Cayman’s junior team.

On Saturday, several matches will start at 10:30 a.m., played between the men’s, ladies and mixed teams with top performances expected from players Macbeth “Bunny” Remedios, Nigel Bates and Mark Williams.

On the ladies team, Paula Daniels, Verity Redrup and Emily Walsh are the outstanding players whose performances on the pitch have been explosive. Long-standing members Sarah Pinches and Jenny Maroulis will be going back to their U.K. roots playing against their Cayman buddies.

In the afternoon, there will be a number of matches between mixed teams from all three competing countries, plus a match played by the club’s youngest members who have been trained this year by former ladies captain Bryony Platt.

Sunday’s series of matches start at 10:30 a.m. with a finale between all teams, followed by the Alex Horner Trophy Match between Cayman and Jamaica.

Now in its fourth year, this match is played biannually to commemorate the passing of one of Cayman hockey’s youngest female players, Alex Horner.

The closing ceremony is at 12:30 p.m.

Cayman Islands Field Hockey Club plays 5 p.m. on Tuesdays at Cayman Prep on Smith Road and 6 p.m. on Saturdays at Cayman International School in Camana Bay. All are welcome. For more information about the club or this year’s tournament, visit or Cayman Field Hockey on Facebook.
