Round 4 action in the Elite Marble & Granite Women’s 7s League on Saturday saw some more thrilling action as the race for the Hob Nob Trophy heated up.
The day’s first game saw joint table toppers, the Omni Sharks and the Kirk Freeport All Diamonds face off.
The All Diamonds started brighter and several penetrating runs by Biannca Johnson had the Sharks on the back foot.
The Sharks just could not hold off the early pressure and Johnson raced away and over the line for the first try.
Johnson then cut through the Sharks defensive line before setting up Harriett Britton who raced clear to score in the corner.
The OMNI Sharks needed a response and Marline Williams answered the call with a powerful run breaking through three tackles before scoring their first points. Laura Willighan restored the All Diamonds 10 point advantage going into the half.
Following a rallying call by coach James Buckley at half-time, the Sharks returned more determined to turn the game around and some good build up play by Tracey Seymour released Chynae Samuels who galloped away from the All Diamonds defenders to score.
This time Shenel Gall converted to bring the Sharks to within three points. The All Diamonds responded with Emily Davies getting her first try for her team.
Gall scored again as time expired and the All Diamonds were able to claim the win 20-17 and what could be a very important bonus point.
The Sharks got a win in the next game, when they beat a resurgent John Doak Architecture Lady Iguanas 12-5 thanks to tries from Williams and the impressive Gall. Joan Murphy scored the Iguanas consolation.
The final game saw the All Diamonds looking to cement their position at the top of the table at the expense of the Lady Iguanas.
A close fought first half saw neither team give ground until Davies scored just before the interval.
Once they had taken the lead, the Iguanas never looked like relinquishing it, and two second half tries by the impressive Murphy sealed a 15-0 win for the Lady Iguanas.
The race for the Hob Nob Trophy ends on May 24 and there is currently only one point separating the Kirk Freeport All Diamonds from second place OMNI Sharks.
