Sunday shooting was attempted robbery

Sunday’s daylight shooting in the parking lot of A.L. Thompson’s hardware store was an attempted robbery connected to illegal gambling in the area, police said Monday.

One man suffered minor injuries from breaking glass after a gunman fired through the driver’s side window of a vehicle parked outside the store, which was closed at the time.

The vehicle, a Ford F150 pickup truck, was driven away from the scene before coming to a stop outside Welly’s Cool Spot around 100 yards away.

Police described the incident as an “attempted robbery.”

According to witnesses, two men rode up on a dark colored scooter. The passenger on the scooter, who was wearing a white cloth wrapped around his face, approached two men in the car park and demanded cash.

The victims were attempting to drive away toward Welly’s when the shots were fired.

“It is believed that the incident was as a result of illegal gambling and not gang related,” police said in a statement on Sunday night.

After the incident, the suspects rode off west, in the direction of Eastern Avenue and Shedden Road, according to police.
