A 28-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in connection with the reported shooting of a man with a spear gun on July 27 in George Town.
The charge against Kerome Orlando Gordon was brought to Summary Court on Monday. Gordon was bailed to appear in Grand Court on Friday, Aug. 15. Defense attorney John Furniss said Gordon denied being responsible for the wounding.
Crown counsel Greg Walcolm advised that he did not object to bail if certain conditions were imposed. Magistrate Valdis Foldats asked for a brief summary of the matter to help him determine what the conditions should be.
Mr. Walcolm said an emergency call was received from the complainant, who reported that he had been shot in his side with a spear gun. He removed the spear himself and was taken to hospital. He told police he did not know the defendant’s real name, but knew his nickname, the make and model of his car, where he worked and that he was married to a Caymanian.
Officers checked at the workplace and subsequently arrested Gordon at his home.
Mr. Furniss said one of the issues will be identification.
Mr. Walcolm asked for surrender of Gordon’s passport, a curfew, reporting to police and a requirement that Gordon stay away from the complainant.
The magistrate said he could release Gordon on those conditions along with a recognizance and surety of $950.
The defendant is also charged with possession of a spear gun without a license. That charge can be dealt with only in Summary Court and will be mentioned again on Aug. 15.
