CONCACAF to train local girls

The Confederation for North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football is celebrating girls football in the Cayman Islands.

As part of the player development grassroots initiative, CONCACAF will conduct a football festival for girls on Saturday, Aug. 16. The T.E. McField Sports Center (also called the Annex) will host the action from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The Grassroots festival for girls will be CONCACAF’s second in the past month, after conducting the inaugural all-girls festival in the Turks and Caicos Islands in July. According to CONCACAF and Cayman Islands Football Association President Jeffrey Webb, the event is part of a long-term plan.

“The girls’ grassroots festival and coaching course fulfills our pledge to develop women’s football from the earliest stages,” Webb said. “CONCACAF is committed to investing in the future of players and coaches by providing opportunities for growth and development.”

The festival is open to girls aged 6-12 and will be conducted by CONCACAF women’s football instructor Heather Dyche. Also in attendance will be CONCACAF women’s football ambassador and former Canadian International Kristina Kiss, who is currently the technical director of the Ottawa Soccer Club.

Director of women’s football for CIFA, Martha Godet, expects the program to have lasting benefits for women’s football in Cayman and will work as the launch for future local girls grassroots programs.

“Thank you to CONCACAF and all involved for creating this opportunity for our girls and coaches to participate in this initiative,” Godet said. “We will see the benefits of this program at the youth level, with young players learning valuable skills and having fun, as well as in our club play and at the national level with our players and coaches.”
