Sunset Football Club is holding its popular six-a-side tournament again this weekend, to raise money for its flourishing youth program.
It is at the Camana Bay field on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cost of team entry is $325 and each team of 10 players will be provided with a jersey. There are 12 teams registered with space for three more. Each player will receive a $10 Duke’s restaurant voucher. Each team will have its own jersey as part of the entry fee.
Fidel Murphy’s restaurant will be at the event with a barbecue and refreshments.
The tournament is in its seventh year and has always been a great success, with a number of teams returning annually. The day is fun-filled, with teams bringing their families down and making it into a big social event too.
Last year’s winners were The Sandlot, a team put together by Justin Pierre and Tom Elliot, and they are one of the favorites again.
The other strong teams include CML, ZolfoCooper and RSM Cayman, a team comprised of a number of experienced former Sunset players including Ian Lomas, Gareth Thacker, Paul Macey, Alex Bodden and Jim Owen. Rumors are RSM Cayman have been training intensively in secret for months and promise to spring an upset on the youngsters.
The others entered are two teams from sixes stalwart Leigh Hipkins as well as UBS, KPMG, Island Heritage, Hews, EY/Intertrust, Maples and St. Ignatius sixth form.
Women are eligible to play, as some did last year.
The winners get the internationally coveted Sunset Sixes trophy and $250 with the winners of the Plate receiving a trophy and some non-cash prizes.
Sunset raised about $2,000 last year which went towards field use for the club.
In addition, the money was used for the Sunday morning program run by Neil Purton. He has about 150 kids aged 4-10 years old in his program.
Sunset have Under-12, U-13, U-15 and U-17 boys teams and an U-15 girls team. All train and play a couple of times a week and compete in the CIFA leagues.
