Update: Medical personnel confirmed a man involved in a motorcycle accident in Savannah Thursday morning was pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital.

Initial story: A one-vehicle crash critically
injured a George Town man just after dawn Thursday and left morning rush hour
traffic through Savannah at a standstill for hours.

According to witnesses at the
scene, a motorcycle driver was overtaking two vehicles westbound on the
shoulder of Shamrock Road just past Savannah Primary School around 6:30 a.m. when
his vehicle clipped a speed limit sign, rolled and slid into the opposite
lanes.

The motorcyclist suffered
serious head injuries and was “unresponsive” when ambulance crews took him away,
according to police. An update on his condition was not immediately provided.

It was not believed any other
vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Royal Cayman Islands Police
officers closed both lanes of Shamrock Road at the crash scene and were
diverting traffic back onto Hirst Road and then to the East-West Arterial.

By 7 a.m. hundreds of cars
were stopped at the Countryside Shopping Centre junction, some having travelled
down Shamrock to the accident scene only to be turned around by police who were
blocking several sections of the road.
