The Cayman Islands beat Guyana at the inaugural T-20 Challenge Trophy at the Smith Road oval last weekend.

Sunday’s cricket challenge, sponsored by NCB, included a double header of exciting games, according to a press release.

Cayman, in the second game of the day, took on a tricky Guyana side, who only managed 67 for 9 in 16.2 overs. Anil Jugbir put up some resistance to top score with 24, but the damage had already been done by Gregory Smith, who took 4 wickets for 13, and Kervin Ebanks ably supported with 3 wickets for 7. Ebanks then came back to open the innings for the Cayman Islands and blasted 41 not out, as Cayman made light work of a small total in 12.4 overs. Omar Willis chipped in with 17 not out as Cayman won by 9 wickets.

The first game pitted two evenly matched teams in Barbados and World Stars.

World Stars batted first and put up 112 in 20 overs, with Basil Legore top scoring with 22, supported by Jalon Linton 21 and Ben Wentzel 17. For Barbados, bowlers Marlon Hoyte took 2 for 18 in his 4 overs and Tennyson Roach got 2 for 21. When Barbados’s turn came to bat, they were docked 6 overs due to a late start, but quickly raced to 41 in the first 4 overs due to some precise hitting from Kirkpatrick Clarke (18) and Dave Holness (16). After these two departed, there was a steady procession of wickets as Barbados fell away to 87 for 9 in their allotted 14 overs. World Stars won by 27 runs.

This weekend’s games will feature World Stars against India at 11 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell oval, Guyana vs. Sri Lanka at 11 a.m. at the Smith Road oval, and – the big game – Jamaica vs. Barbados at 2:30 p.m., also at the Smith Road oval.
