Updated: Police find body of missing boater

Update: Searchers on Monday afternoon located the body of a man who was missing at sea following a two-boat collision in the North Sound on Sunday. He was the second person to die in the crash.

Original story: Search and rescue personnel were looking for a missing person following a fatal boat crash late Sunday night near the Prospect area of North Sound, police said.

Police released few details Monday morning, but did say that one person had been killed in the two-boat accident.

Rescue workers were looking for a 49-year-old man, of George Town, who was unaccounted for after the collision, police spokesman Mikhail Campbell said.

He said a third person had been taken to Cayman Islands Hospital for treatment, but was unable to provide information on that person’s condition.

The accident took place just before 10pm Sunday.

A search was conducted by officers from the Fire Service, Joint Marine Unit, and Air Operations Unit but was suspended shortly before 4am Monday due to poor visibility. The search resumed at 6am and remained ongoing by early afternoon.

Police are appealing for small boat owners or jet skis to help them in the search for the missing boater. Anyone who can assist should contact the Joint Marine Unit on 649-7710.
