The 23rd annual Dashing Thru The Sand beach run/walk brought 107 tourists and residents out onto the white sands of Seven Mile Beach on Boxing Day. Among the early-morning runners were some of Cayman’s top athletes, with the likes of Olympian sprinter Kemar Heyman, long jumper Carl Morgan, and Pan American Games silver medallist Kareem Streete-Thompson taking part.

Tourists from the US, Canada, Denmark and Italy also participated in the run on Thursday morning, including Frank Pickens from Atlanta, who has been a regular visitor to the islands over the past 20 years.

“Initially, we started coming here to scuba dive, but during those years of diving, we came across Dashing Thru The Sand and it’s really one of the things we enjoy most,” said Pickens. “So, we plan our vacation to make sure we are here for Boxing Day, to be able to do this. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy Seven Mile Beach and meet other lovely people. So, yeah, it’s one our favourite things to do on the island.”

The run/walk is hosted each year in the name of unity, and organiser Jerry Harper said it has lived up to its expectations. “It’s nice to see the event grow like this,” he said. “We have people from all over the world here. “We do this because we look to bring people together, and this is all about CaymanKind.”
