Governor Martyn Roper has tested negative for COVID-19, he said on Monday.

The governor shared his result in a tweet from his official Twitter account, saying that he was tested on Friday along with staff at the Governor’s Office and Government House.

“I’m pleased to report all results were negative. A quick, simple procedure,” he tweeted.

Roper is the first local high-level government official to confirm he has undergone testing and to share the result publicly.

As of Friday, Cayman had a total of 81 cases; 41 have recovered, one has died, eight are symptomatic, 29 are asymptomatic, and two are in hospital for unrelated conditions.

Also as of Friday, 3,423 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands.

Roper, in response to queries from the Cayman Compass via email, stressed how critical it was for individuals to come forward for testing.

“[It is] important that our front-line staff, who are the ones most exposed to other people, to have the test so that we can really understand better whether there is more virus out there. It is a key part of our suppression strategy to enable us to open up safely,” he said.

Commenting on his experience, Roper said, “As most others have observed, it is fine, and a very quick procedure.”

He said the experience of being tested is nothing to be scared about.

“Some may find it slightly uncomfortable, but it is nothing to worry about,” he added.
