NiCE provides job opportunities during pandemic

The Christmas edition of the annual National Community Enhancement programme, known as NiCE, is gearing up to begin next week.

The temporary work scheme provides a stipend for up to two weeks of work, and often sees participants being deployed with partnering government agencies to clean roadways, parks, beaches and cemeteries, and even assist at the landfill.

Each year, more than 1,000 people flock to the Lion Centre to register for the programme however, this year, because COVID-19 gathering restrictions limit crowds to 500, organisers had to rethink how they registered participants.

“So, this year they are doing it a bit different by going out to the different districts,” said Dianne Connolly, the Bodden Town Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman group manager.

“We are trying to be accommodating to their needs as well, so they are able to register in each district,” she added. “It keeps the numbers low and it makes things more personable.”

Prior to Wednesday’s signing-up event, 114 applications were submitted by people who had previously worked in a NiCE project.

The first round of work begins on Monday, 7 Dec., and runs through 18 Dec.

“There will be another cohort that will be done in January, so those who were not given the opportunity in the first two weeks will probably get an opportunity in the new year,” said Paul Puckering of Workforce Opportunities & Residency Cayman.
