81 local COVID cases reported over weekend; one hospitalised

Since Friday, 81 people, including 13 children, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the local community, and one person with COVID has been hospitalised, Chief Medical Office Dr. John Lee reported Monday morning.

The patient was admitted to hospital for “an unrelated matter”, Lee said, adding that another person who had been hospitalised earlier this month has been discharged. This leaves a total of two people who had tested positive for COVID in hospital, as a woman who was admitted in early September remains at the Cayman Islands Hospital.

As well as the 81 community transmission cases, two travellers were found to be positive in their quarantine exit tests, according to Lee’s update.

“Obviously, these results are since Friday morning’s report,” Lee said. “That’s around an average of 27 people positive per day over the weekend.”

As of 8am Monday, 56,241 people, or 79% of the estimated population of 71,106, had received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 54,030 – or 76% – had received both doses.

In addition, 2,603 people, or 11% of the over-50 population, had received a third, or booster, dose.

Lee urged anyone who has tested positive in a PCR or lateral flow test to remain in isolation at home, with their households, until they have discussed with Public Health the next steps to take.

He added that more information about the government roll-out of the use of lateral flow tests would be available soon.

A release from Public Health noted that there is now a dedicated support hotline available for people in isolation, which can be reached by calling 946-3530. The Isolation Support Line is also available toll free by calling 1-800-534-3530, and by email to [email protected]

The Isolation Support Line’s operational hours are from 9am to 4pm from Monday to Friday, and from 9am to 1pm on Saturday. Calls on Saturday and Sunday will be forwarded to the Hazard Management Cayman Islands duty officer.
