With Cayman gearing up for a host of Halloween activities this weekend, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has issued some safety tips for trick-or-treaters of all ages.
In a press release, police implored motorists to drive with extra vigilance and to look out for children walking by the roads. Drivers are warned to expect delays in traffic in areas known for having Halloween events.
Parents are reminded that they should walk facing the flow of traffic and retain proper control of their children; they are asked not to allow them to venture onto the road and put themselves at risk.
Police suggest wearing reflective clothing or carrying lights, in order to be seen by motorists.
The reminder comes as police have relaunched ‘Operation Quaker’ with a renewed focus on night-time speeding and DUI.
The release further advised trick-or-treaters not to knock on doors for treats after 9pm, unless it is clear that the occupants are still awake and accepting visitors. The police also cautioned people to only go to residences and locations that indicate that they are participating in Halloween activities.
With COVID protocols in place, as local case numbers mount, people who are quarantining at a private residence, are vulnerable or have health concerns, are reminded “you need not to open your door to trick-or-treaters or find a safe way to do so”. The statement added that other COVID regulations continue to remain in place.
In addition, police are advising caution when parking and leaving vehicles for an extended period, especially in unfamiliar areas. Motorists are asked to ensure that valuables are not left in the vehicle, and to park in a well-lit area, ideally in the view of surveillance cameras.
Police are also reminding the public, “Damage to property and disorderly conduct is an offense in the Cayman Islands and anyone vandalizing or damaging property will be dealt with as they would be on any other night.”
Additionally, people have been asked to exercise caution throughout the weekend by not drinking and driving, staying together with friends, and looking out for each other.
“Do not leave drinks unattended, be aware of your surroundings and have a plan to get home safely,” the release said.
