While attempting to arrest a wanted man in George Town on Thursday, police officers drew their tasers after he threatened them with a knife.

Police confirmed the incident happened near the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue on Thursday afternoon, saying in a statement that the man, whose identity they have withheld, eventually avoided capture.

The incident unfolded while officers were conducting “proactive patrols” in George Town.

Royal Cayman Islands Police Service firearms officers, the statement said, identified the wanted man near the Government Administration Building and, as they approached him, they said he brandished a knife and threatened them.

“In response, the officers drew their tasers and instructed the man to drop the knife. However the man fled on foot before officers could detain him,” the statement said. “Officers pursued the man but lost sight of him in the vicinity of the passport office on Elgin Avenue.”
