After several postponements this year due to COVID, the Edsell Haylock Memorial Darts Tournament took place Sunday, 1 May, at the All Stars Sports Bar with 20 people competing for top spots.

Haylock was reported missing on 6 March 2016 with two other men and two boys after they left for 12 Mile Bank on a fishing trip; the five have never been found.

The tournament, held to honour Haylock who won gold for the Cayman Islands at the 2008 Darts Caribbean Championships, featured many friends, former competitors and family turning out, including his daughter Bellalisa Haylock.

“It feels good and I’m really happy because of all the people that loved him, and I feel really special,” Bellalisa, 10, told the Cayman Compass during the event.

The annual tournament will be held until Bellalisa turns 18, with all the funds raised donated to her, according to Cassius Anglin, president of the Cayman Islands Darts Association.

“He meant a lot to darts and Cayman,” Anglin said. “This was the sport that he loved. Edsell meant a lot to us and so does his daughter, and it may not be much, but every bit counts.”

Champions in three divisions were crowned at the darts competition.

Winning the overall male division was Alfredo Sampiano; Miriam Rodriguez won the female division; and Sampiano and Janssen Driz claimed the doubles championship.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled for April, according to Anglin.
