OfReg has launched an investigation into a suspected illegal fuel storage site following a fire that erupted as a car was being filled with fuel at a private home in Mangrove Avenue in Prospect on Wednesday night, 7 Sept.
Fire Service and RCIPS officers brought the blaze under control, and while no one was injured, there was significant damage caused to the property and equipment, according to a statement by OfReg.
A team from the utilities regulator visited the site “to address the matter of storage equipment observed at the location”, where they found “a significant quantity of gasoline and diesel”, which was seized under the Dangerous Substances Act.
Chief Fuel Inspector Duke Munroe said in the statement, “These illegal operations which fly under the radar continue to present significant danger to the public and the environment. We rely heavily on members of the public to report these situations to us so we can take appropriate enforcement action.”
OfReg reminded the public that it is illegal to store more than 250 gallons of fuel without a valid operating permit.
“Where fuel is stored below the legal threshold, for permanent or incidental/temporary storage, the office is available to provide guidance on the safe storage and transport of dangerous substances,” the statement noted.
