A man previously banned from driving as a condition of his bail and charged in two separate fatal collisions has found himself before the courts over new charges for dangerous driving and weapons possession.
Appearing before the Summary Court via video link on Wednesday 8 May, Tarrick Kevin Crawford listened to the proceedings from Northward Prison, as an attorney told the court not much progress could be made with his case.
“Legal aid has been applied for [for] this matter, and we are currently awaiting a response,” said Oliver Grimwood, appearing on behalf of Prathna Bodden, Crawford’s regular attorney.
Crawford, 30, of West Bay, now faces three counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm, and one count each of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance and using a vehicle with expired registration.
The charges stem from a 21 April incident, shortly after 8pm near a plaza on West Bay Road. Police say they observed a vehicle with two men in a Toyota Mark II, driven by Crawford, “acting suspiciously” in the vicinity of Public Beach.
Crawford then sped off, police say, prompting officers to follow. They described the men throwing various items out of the vehicle, before coming to a stop a short distance away.
“A single round of ammunition was located in the vehicle,” said a police spokesperson in a statement released 22 April. “Subsequently, a search of the area where the men were seen throwing objects from the vehicle was also conducted, which resulted in a handgun and a loaded magazine being recovered.”
Crawford had previously been banned from driving any vehicle by Grand Court Judge Cheryll Richards as a condition of bail set in relation to the deaths of Shayne Ewart and Chuck Ebanks.
In light of the new charges, Crawford’s bail has been revoked.
Prosecutor Alliyah McCarthy said the Crown is looking to have new charges sent to the Grand Court based on the strength of the uncontested evidence.
“The court is aware of the outstanding matters before the Grand Court, and this case won’t affect those matters,” Grimwood said, suggesting a short-form committal hearing pending the response regarding legal aid.
A second man in the vehicle, Jordan Neil Ebanks, said to have been a passenger, also faces three counts of possession of an unlicensed firearm.
Neither of the men have been arraigned on the new charges. They have both been remanded into custody until their next Summary Court appearance on 24 May.
