An East End man has been arrested following a confrontation with a police officer at a traffic stop, which ended with the suspect being pepper-sprayed and later crashing his vehicle after fleeing the scene.

The incident occurred shortly before 1am on Tuesday at a vehicle stop on Bodden Town Road.

An RCIPS statement on Tuesday afternoon said police were conducting the stop when the 23-year-old man “became combative” towards the officer, after being asked for his identification and the documents for the vehicle he was driving.

Police said the officer attempted to arrest the man, at which time he tried to drive away causing the officer to fall to the ground.

“The driver and a passenger then exited the vehicle, and advanced on the officer, in attempts to assault him, causing the officer to deploy his pepper spray,” police said in the statement.

The 23-year-old then fled in his vehicle, but lost control, “causing it to flip and come to a stop in nearby bushes”, the RCIPS said.

He was arrested for assaulting an officer, giving false details, and careless driving, and was transported to the detention centre.

The police officer was taken by ambulance to the hospital for assessment, and later released.

Investigations are continuing into the incident.
