Sunset FC women’s team showcased their strength and talent on 6 Dec., at the prestigious Herron Cup in Miami, returning home with both the U17 and U14 trophies.
The U17 girls delivered a strong showing in the round-robin stage, tying two games and winning one. Their performance in the final featured a dominant 4-0 win over Cooper City Optimist.
On the other hand, the U14 girls took part in a thrilling and hard-fought final, after a nil-all tie in regular play against Florida United SC. The Cayman girls went on to win 7-6 in a nail-biting penalty shootout, to secure their championship title.
“Both teams were lauded for their discipline, determination, and sportsmanship,” Gisela Gamba, head coach for Sunset told the Compass via text. “Most of the players in both squads are part of the national program, making these away tournaments excellent preparation for the upcoming CONCACAF competitions.”
She added that the experience at the Herron Cup is a key step in honing their skills and building the necessary resilience for future challenges.

The teams’ international success builds on what the club has accomplished since their domestic season began several weeks ago.
The Sunset FC senior team, which is made up of many of the youngsters who were playing in the Herron Cup, also won the Cayman Islands Football Association Charity Shield last month and kicked off league play with 18-0 thrashing over Latinos FC.
But for Gamba, her team’s success in Florida is what they are celebrating heading into the holidays.
“The victories not only demonstrate the incredible talent of Sunset FC’s youth players but also highlight the strength of their development programs,” she said. “As these teams continue to prepare for international competitions, their success at the Herron Cup serves as a powerful reminder of their potential on the global stage.
“With the tournament now behind them, Sunset FC looks forward to continued success and growth, both on the national and international levels. For now, the focus is on celebrating this historic double win at the Herron Cup and using the momentum to fuel future victories.”
