A Cayman-flagged fishing vessel, which issued a distress call after losing its propeller at sea, has been towed to Roatan, Honduras, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard has confirmed.

The boat, called Cardvern, was towed to Roatan by Honduran-registered motor vessel CORTES 1, after reaching the drifting boat Wednesday afternoon.

The coast guard reported that the three crew members remained on board the Cardvern and were safe.

The vessel was expected to arrive in Brick Bay, Roatan, on Friday morning.

The report of the 36-foot vessel being in distress was received just after 8:18am on Sunday, 1 June. At the time, it was near Rosario Bank, about 160 nautical miles from Grand Cayman.

After receiving the distress call from the ship’s captain, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard’s Operations Rescue Coordination Centre initiated international notifications protocols, which included the UK’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the US Coast Guard District 7 in Miami, Florida, and the Central American Search and Rescue Centre in Honduras.

“As the vessel is located within Honduras’ designated Search and Rescue Region, the Honduran authorities assumed responsibility for rendering assistance to FV Cardvern,” the Cayman Islands Coast Guard said in a statement earlier this week.
