One of the most popular places to play pickleball in the Cayman Islands, Pickleball Cayman, has applied for planning permission for extra courts – a sign that interest in pickleball continues to grow.
Planning permission for a sports facility with an onsite bar and restaurant was first granted in April 2022, with the multi-court site opening just over a year later.
New courts planned
Now the owner of the site, located on the corner of Smith Road and Bobby Thompson Way in George Town, is hoping to add a new covered structure to its existing set-up, which will house an extra eight pickleball courts and four padel courts.
Padel is another fast-growing racquet sport in the US and can be described as a cross between squash and tennis. The sport is played on courts similar to tennis but the ball can be bounced off the surrounding walls.

The $900,000 application also proposes an extra 37 parking spaces to add to the existing 137 spaces, bringing the total at the site to 174.
The matter came before the Central Planning Authority at its 9 July meeting, and it was decided to adjourn the matter so that the National Roads Authority could comment on the proposal.
