The Deloitte Devil Rays and Coconut Joes recently saw their dreams of ball hockey glory come to an end.
The squads lost in the semi-finals of the 2011-2012 Cayman Islands Ball Hockey League. The matches took place at Kings Sports Centre last Thursday. Deloitte, a fourth seed, were ousted by top club the Barracudas 2-1 while Coconut Joes lost 4-3 to the Sharks in the second versus third match-up.
The Barracudas got goals from veteran Rob Seward and Warren Weiss. Rob Rintoul had the lone score on the night for Deloitte. The Devil Rays cocaptain, who had help during the regular season from players like Jason Windsor and Brent Forsyth, states the defeat was a tough pill to swallow.
“We only had three or four wins this year but it’s hard to lose like that,” Rintoul said. “With all of the possession we had it’s a tough way to lose. If they took it to us I would be more OK with the result. But there’s always next season I guess.
“With us we had a slow start, going 0-6 in the beginning. But we came together at the end. I think the guys got used to each other.”
In the other contest, a hat-trick from the Sharks’ Brad Kirby in the first half would seal the Joes’ fate. To their credit, the Joes made the score-line respectable with two late goals from Mark Missal.
The other score came from role player Donnie Gardiner, who states the defeat was rough.
“It was a tough game, we played tough to the end,” Gardiner said. “We just came up short. A lot of games this season we were short of players. Yet on Thursday we had the full compliment of guys out there. The team put it together in the second half of the game.”
