Newball appeared in court Monday on several charges, including robbery, possession of criminal property, handling stolen goods – relating to two gold rings with precious stones – theft of property and causing damage to property – relating to a Rav 4 vehicle recovered following the robbery – possession of ganja and failing to provide a urine sample for testing.
The robbery took place about 11.20am on 22 December, 2011, when three suspects armed with axes entered Magnum Jewelers on Cardinall Avenue and smashed display cases before making off with an undisclosed amount of merchandise in a stolen Rav 4. The vehicle was later found burned out a short distance away on Wahoo Close in George Town.
Police arrested Newball on suspicion of robbery and other offences following a police operation in the Windsor Park area of George Town on 10 January, according to a news release issued by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. An undisclosed quantity of jewellery has been recovered, authorities said.
Newball was remanded in custody and ordered to appear before the Grand Court on 27 January.
