“I can’t understand why I’ve gained so much weight since moving to Cayman” is a common complaint that I hear from ex-pats and newcomers to the Islands.
Let’s investigate some of the challenges and factors that may contribute to this phenomenon.
In spite of Cayman’s really gorgeous climate, which fosters outdoor activity, many people are not as active here as in their own countries. Some complain that it’s too hot to exercise outside, and I’m reminded of my friends walking in the chilly snow in Canada longing for the sunshine and warmth we share.
Other people may feel uncertain about the safety in outdoor activity, which is why teaming up with others is a good idea.
Cayman’s environment may not easily foster travel to and from work on foot or bicycle, and whether this is just an attitude or a result of road systems, you will have to decide. Seeing women walk to work in New York City in their high-top sneakers and business suits is an eye-opener. In Cayman, would we gawk at such appearance with disbelief?
Of course, the lure of tropical vibes and paradise may snare one into the habits of too many tropical cocktails too many days of the week, especially upon arriving to the island. An increase in alcohol consumption and reduction in physical activity will certainly play havoc with the waistline.
In spite of the array of healthy foods in supermarkets and increase in organic and natural products, Cayman still boasts a diet high in fat, saturated fat, salt, starchy carbohydrates and large portions. It’s easy to take that container of delicious jerked chicken and consume the masses of rice and festival that accompanies it or pile heaps of the most fattening foods onto your tray at local delis.
So, ex-pat and newcomer to Cayman, be aware. Help yourself by designing a new lifestyle here in Cayman to minimise the risk of gaining excess body fat and weight or losing what you have gained.
Obesity is pretty much becoming the norm for all genders; it was once mostly the domain of women, but now men and our youth are equally challenged. Look about you and decide what you can do remain fit, active, in good health and at a healthy weight.
Choosing to live your life differently takes courage and commitment.
