The National Council of Voluntary Organisations, in conjunction with the John Gray Memorial Grant, has awarded funding to nine students studying for their first degrees in colleges and universities overseas.
Money provided by the volunteer organisation, as well as a donation of US$1,500 from the Class of 1969, has allowed the John Gray Memorial Fund Committee to extend financial assistance for expenses such as books, accommodations and transportation to college students from the Cayman Islands studying abroad.
Three of the students are past recipients of the grant, while the other six applicants are first time recipients.
The students are studying courses including hospitality management, social work, finance, music, and business administration.
The grant is named in honour of the late Rev. John Rae Gray, a former NCVO Council and executive committee member, United Church minister and high school principal. Mr. Gray died 1992.
Money is granted each year to young Caymanian students who wish to attend college or university, but have insufficient funding to cover their living expenses.
This year, a total of US$21,000 was distributed to applicants.
Committee members who determine the grants are Charles Farrington, Elizabeth Schofield, Janice Wilson, Alta Bodden-Solomon and Olive Miller.
The National Council of Voluntary Organisations is an independent, nonprofit, charitable organisation dedicated to the care, education and well-being of children and families in need of support in the Cayman Islands.
Donations to the John Gray Memorial Grant can be made by contacting the organisation at 949-2124.
