Disney Challenge winners

Prospect Primary’s Year 6 class has been named the 2008 winner of the Disney Environmentality Challenge in the Cayman Islands.

The students will be recognised onboard the Disney Magic cruise ship during a special awards ceremony and day of fun coinciding with Earth Day on April 22.

Through their project titled “Protecting Our Natural Habitat”, students in teacher Rowena Jackson’s class cleaned up their school pond, planted native flora to attract wildlife and created campaign signs to reduce litter in their school, said a press release.

Working with local experts, they also created a school compost heap to cut down on organic material going to the landfill and educate their class on the importance of reducing waste wherever possible.

Few recycling facilities currently exist in the Cayman Islands, so the students found creative ways to reuse commonly discarded items in class projects and art programmes, saving supply costs while further reducing waste.

Local dignitaries, media and the cast and crew of the Disney Magic cruise ship will celebrate their efforts on Earth Day while the cruise ship is docked in Grand Cayman.

This year, over 600 Cayman students in 35 classes took part in this environmental programme, each pledging to make a positive difference in the environment.

The DEC in the Cayman Islands is a result of a partnership between Disney Cruise Line and the Department of Tourism, Department of Education and Department of Environment. The two-part programme encourages children to take an active part in pledging to protect the environment and problem-solve environmental issues in their local community. Similar programmes are supported by Disney in California, Florida and Hong Kong, with more than one million students worldwide taking the Challenge since its inception in 2003.
