Time to get excited about prizes

Just days before race day, organisers of the Cayman Islands Marathon are still working feverishly to secure great prizes for runners, two of which are a pair of exquisite TAG Heuer watches for the top male and female marathoners courtesy of sponsor Kirk Freeport.

In addition, prizes for the top three male and female marathoners and half marathoners in the age categories of 29 and under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over will be awarded. The top three relay teams also receive awards.

Other prizes include Maui Jim Sports sunglasses donated by Island Companies, mobile phones from major sponsor Digicel, iPods courtesy of CyberJoes and gift certificates from Full of Beans Café, Thai Orchid, Luca, Ragazzi, Bacchus Restaurant & Wine Bar, Eclipze Hair Design and Day Spa, Focus Hair and Beauty and the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman.

‘We are so grateful to all of our supporters who have provided us with these great gifts for our runners,’ said race director Rhonda Kelly of Kelly Holding Ltd.

‘I don’t think anyone runs 26.2 miles, 13.1 miles or even 6.5 miles just to win a prize but it is a bonus and a reward which can prove very motivational.’

Kelly said the ultimate goal is to offer cash prizes to runners. This is something organisers are working on for future races.

‘Most marathons offer some kind of monetary award for runners’ efforts. This enhances the credibility of the race for a serious athlete, and raises the level of participation. As the race grows, we will be in a better position to give cash prizes.’

Registration for the Cayman Islands Marathon, half-marathon and four-person relay is still open. To register, log on to CaymanIslandsMarathon.com. Participants can also do walk-in registration at the Kelly Holding office.
