Cayman Airways has taken under its wings members of the Royal Cayman Islands’ Police Force Squash Team for training and travel to Quebec.
The Canadian city is the host of this year’s World Police & Fire Games.
The Games are now the second-largest international sporting event after the famed Summer Olympics and attracts more and more athletes each year, according to a CAL press release.
When Hurricane Ivan hit Cayman in September, local squash courts were destroyed, and remain unrepaired.
Nevertheless, the RCIP squash team was determined to maintain personal fitness by training locally.
When the team received invitations from squash associations in the US and Jamaica to use their facilities for practice, the members approached Cayman Airways for support.
In the months leading up to the late June-early July games, Cayman Airways transported the team to use the proffered facilities.
‘It is great to see that such a setback as the Hurricane, in addition to dealing with personal loss and rebuilding, has not hindered the team from reaching their goal of attending the Games,’ said Michael Adam, CEO and president of Cayman Airways.
‘The invitations by the overseas associations for the Cayman Islands team to utilize their courts for practice were statements parallel to that of the airline – Cayman Airways remains committed to assisting in worthy community ventures. The management and staff of the airline wish the team all the best in Quebec,’ the pres release said
The team left for the Quebec on Friday.
