Troy Leacock appointed new tourism association president

Troy Leacock is the new president of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, taking up the role from Marc Langevin, who has served for the past two years.

Leacock, owner of Crazy Crab water-sports company, was chosen from among the members of the CITA board of directors, who were elected during the association’s annual general meeting last week.

In a statement, Leacock said, “I’m very excited to work with the new Board of Directors for the upcoming year as we strive to increase and broaden our membership to fully represent and engage all stakeholders of the tourism industry. We look forward to welcoming many of the hundreds of small and micro businesses which are an important part of our tourism tapestry.”

He added, “The new board will work diligently to help our members meet the challenges and opportunities as we turn the page from reopening to now rebuilding our industry.”

In his farewell address at the AGM held at the Marriott hotel on 20 Oct., Langevin, who headed the association through the most challenging period in its history when COVID had effectively shut down the tourism industry, said lessons had been learned over the past two years.

He told members that the COVID-19 pandemic and the border closures had taught sectors within the tourism industry, such as the restaurants, hotels and watersports operators, as well as the government, to work together rather than in silos and to share information on a regular basis.

“When I think about the last two years, what I’m most proud of, is the voice of our industry was heard; maybe not on every single decision, but at least we were heard,” he said.

He added that he was also very proud of CITA directors. “It has been a challenging two years – many hours, phone calls late at night… the board of directors of CITA has been amazing.”

Langevin welcomed the new Cayman Airways direct flight to Los Angeles, which launches on 5 Nov., saying, “At a time when other carriers have reduced routes, it is a blessing that Cayman has the ability and vision to open a direct flight to the LA market, setting Cayman in a unique value proposition which will set us apart from all other Caribbean islands and compete even against the Hawaiian Islands.”
