A total of 18 Cubans, 11 of whom were picked up by a passing motor tanker on Saturday, are now under the care of Cayman’s Customs and Border Control agency, taking the tally of Cubans in CBC custody to 335.
The 18 new arrivals are the latest influx of Cubans making the voyage to flee their homeland, according to a CBC statement Monday.
CBC said around 5pm on Saturday, 26 November the Cayman Islands Coast Guard received a call from a motor tanker 170 nautical miles west-northwest of Grand Cayman, stating that they had come upon a small craft with 11 Cubans onboard, 9 males and 2 females.

CBC and the ‘Mass Migration Committee’ were notified of the pending arrival.
The statement said the 11 people were taken on board the tanker, “in keeping with international maritime laws and related obligations… in full coordination and cooperation with the CICG and the CBC”.
They were later transferred from the tanker and transported to the port in George Town.
At approximately 8:30pm, that same night, another three male Cubans arrived in the Spot Bay area of Cayman Brac.
Their arrival was preceded on Thursday, 24 November by four male Cubans who arrived at approximately 6:30am on Cayman Brac.
All arrivals are being processed in accordance with established CBC protocols, the statement added.
