The Cayman Islands Darts Association is moving into the final stages of its national team selection process following the conclusion of the men’s tryouts last week.

The association is working to assemble a national squad to represent the Islands at the upcoming Caribbean Darts Championship, scheduled to take place in Nassau, Bahamas, from 27 July to 2 Aug.

The men’s selection process began on 4 Feb. at Mango Tree, with sessions held every Wednesday and Thursday night.

Sharing some insight into the tryouts, Kruse Smith, the association’s president, said that a total of 21 male players initially entered the field, though three withdrew during the process.

The tryout format required every participant to compete against every other player in a best-of-five game series.

Under this points-based system, players earned one point for a win and zero for a loss, with those at the top of the standings positioning themselves for a spot on the eight-man roster.

Smith, who took over the role from Cassius Anglin in October 2025, noted the turnout was a testament to the local interest in the sport.

“It was an excellent turnout that resulted in the Mango Tree space being completely full. It was great and encouraging to see such a large turnout from our members who want to continue to grow the sport in the Cayman Islands,” Smith said.

While the results on the dart board carry significant weight, Smith confirms that the final decision for the eight available spots rests with the association’s executive committee.

Women’s national team tryouts

The focus now shifts to the women’s national team selection, with the tryouts for the four available female spots set to begin during the second week of March.

These sessions will follow the same eligibility requirements and competitive format as the men’s division. Tryouts are open to all association members who have resided in the Cayman Islands for at least six months.

The association plans to announce the full national squad – comprising both the men’s and women’s teams – during the middle of the month.

Once the selections are finalised, Smith said an email will be sent to all members to confirm the roster, with the third week of March marking the official start of team training as the players begin their preparation period for the championships in the Bahamas.
