Three men who admitted landing in Cayman illegally were sentenced on Wednesday to serve 76 days’ imprisonment. They had been in custody 79 days since their arrest in Breakers on 18 Feb.

Teenager hurt in stolen bike crash

A 15-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car outside the Lighthouse Restaurant in Breakers Friday evening. The 450cc Kawasaki motorcycle was one of two dirt bikes reported stolen from Frenchman’s Drive in Bodden Town.

Lookout Grocery hit by armed robbery

An armed robbery hit Lookout Grocery on Anton Bodden Drive around 3 p.m. Wednesday. A male suspect reportedly brandished a weapon before stealing cash and a cellular phone. He then escaped in the owner’s gold Ford Explorer.

50 years ago: Lighthouse Club officially opens in Breakers

In the March 15, 1967 edition of the Caymanian Weekly, a precursor of the Cayman Compass, news from Bodden Town included: “There was a very happy time spent on Monday evening, March 6, at the formal opening of the Lighthouse Club Ltd. at Breakers."

50 years ago: Breakers’ Lighthouse Club highlighted

In the Jan. 4, 1966 edition of the Caymanian Weekly, a precursor of the Cayman Compass, contributor R.M. Walters wrote: “A structure of dignity and grace, Cayman’s unique Lighthouse Club stands imposingly yet attractively at Breakers, on the Island’s south east coast."

Licensing Department open in Breakers

The new Department of Vehicle and Drivers’ Licensing branch is now open to the public at the SouthCoast Plaza in Breakers, Bodden Town. The plaza opened on Thursday, Oct. 14, and features a full inspection station, registration and drivers’ licensing kiosks offering similar services to the one on Crewe Road in George Town.

50 years ago: Light House construction close to completion

In the Aug. 24, 1966 edition of the Caymanian Weekly, a precursor of the Cayman Compass, Bodden Town correspondent Haig Bodden wrote: “The Light House Club, which will be opened in a few months time, is now nearing completion of its construction. Situated at Breakers, in the eastern part of Bodden Town the clubhouse commands one of the most breathtaking oceanfront views there is in Grand Cayman."

Breakers licensing facility to open in July

A third government vehicle licensing facility is due to open in Breakers in July, Planning Minister Kurt Tibbetts announced last week.

Then and now: the Lighthouse in Breakers

Originally opened as the Lighthouse Club in 1966, the structure was designed and owned by Leon Hull. The head carpenter on the project was Cedric Levy of Bodden Town. Mr. Hull used narrow gauge railway tracks shipped in from Texas as the reinforcing beams, which proved their robustness as the main structure of the Lighthouse Restaurant held firm during Hurricane Ivan.
