Students shadow Hyatt staff

Groundhog Job Shadow Day is an annual event held in the United States and is supported by many major companies such as the Hyatt Corporation.

Although the Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman’s properties sustained major damage during Hurricane Ivan, they still managed to re-open their 53 Beach Suites in December and on 2 February were able to participate in this years Job Shadow event.

Students from various high schools on the island including John Gray High School, St Ignatius High School and Triple C High School were very excited about having their students part take in this event.

Although the number of students were fewer than in the past, General Manager, Mr. Mark Bastis, said it was important to still participate. Through this unique program, the opportunity is there to create awareness, spark interest and expose Cayman’s high school age students to the hospitality and tourism industry. The concept behind the event is to give Cayman’s youth an up close look at different careers and opportunities available to them in the industry and how the skills they learn at school are put into action in the work place.

Students had the opportunity to shadow employees within key positions including: the General Manager, MIS Manager, Human Resources Manager, Food & Beverage Manager, Front Desk and Reservations Manager, Housekeeping Manager and the Chief Engineering. Students also received employee orientation packages along with Hyatt gifts for participating in this worthy event.

Assistant Director of Human Resources, Samantha Bennett, said this opportunity not only builds community partnerships between schools and Hyatt Regency Grand Cayman, but it also demonstrates the connection between the academics and careers, exciting students to learn by making their class work more relevant and introduces students to the requirements of professions and industries to help them prepare to join the workforce for the 21st Century.
