Eight police recruits, including two women, graduated from the Training Department of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service on Friday.
PC Shane Bothwell, PC Carlye Bulgin, PC Leslie Laing-Hall, PC Bill McLaughlin, PC John Morrison, PC Gustavo Rodriguez, WPC Ingrid Spence and WPC Katrina Thompson received their passing out certificates from Police Commissioner Buel Braggs at the Governor’s House.
Presenting the special awards was the Governor, Mr. Bruce Dinwiddy.
PC Shane Bothwell received awards for Best Academic, Physical Education and the Master Mind Quiz.
Second Best Academic and Best Drill student went to PC Gustavo Rodriguez.
Leslie Laing-Hall received the Best Turnout award, WPC Ingrid Spence, Most Consistent and PC John Morrison the Training Commander Award.
In the past 20 weeks training officer Inspector Lee said the group of individuals had witnessed much, including Hurricane Ivan, which he said had interrupted the training for five months.
But he said the recruits adjusted well, and the experience gained could not have been taught in the classroom.
Commissioner Braggs’ message to the new recruits was: ‘You will be dealing with problems that may numb the minds of many but not you! You have been carefully chosen and specially trained to provide the standard of service our community properly expects from its police service.’
