Kindergarten student awarded for bravery

A kindergarten student from St. Ignatius Prep School was recently awarded a certificate for bravery and vigilance.

Joshua McCartney, 5, received the certificate from Commissioner of Police Buel Braggs for his initiative in making a 911 call which resulted in the capture of a suspect who was alleged to have committed a burglary in the district of West Bay.

‘It gives me great pleasure in conferring this certificate of commendation to Joshua for his brave actions,’ said the commissioner.

‘This I believe was praiseworthy and the entire RCIP would like to congratulate him for this.

‘This underscores the need for residents in our islands to work together with the police in its fight against crime, which has the potential of destroying the very fabric of our community.’

Commissioner Braggs said he congratulated PC Pompey and PC Spence of the Community Policing Department for their crime-reduction initiative, which was recently carried out at St. Ignatius Prep School.

It was as a result of this initiative that young Joshua was able to call 911.

The programme will be ongoing and will be facilitated by other members of the Community Policing Department in other schools, the sommissioner said.

Corinna Pilgrim, Joshua’s teacher at St Ignatius, said he was a bright, popular and responsible student who looked out for others in his class.

‘I am very proud that he showed courage and good thinking in the midst of adversity. It is a good example of doing something and not putting himself in danger.’
