Assaults up, burglaries down
A drastic increase in the number of thefts in August compared to the previous month was due to petty crime, Acting Police Commissioner Rudolph Dixon told a briefing.
In August the figure for thefts was 72 compared to 51 in the previous month.
But Mr. Dixon told an RCIP press briefing on Thursday that it was usual to get more thefts during the summer break when youngsters were out of school.
The thefts were petty thefts and involved mainly small items left unattended and unsecured, he explained.
The briefing heard that assaults were up from 52 in July to 80 in August but that burglaries were down from 89 in July to 60 last month.
Commenting on the drop in the number of burglaries, Mr. Dixon said he was grateful to the public for their assistance and information and for securing their properties.
The road blocks the RCIP were employing had also proved to be successful, he said.
But, despite the reduction in burglaries, Mr. Dixon urged people not to get complacent and to remain vigilant.
As in July, there were no shootings in August and that was a drastic decrease over previous months, said Mr. Dixon.
There were five robberies in August compared to two in July, he said.
On community policing, Mr. Dixon said he had promised to have six enhanced neighbourhood watches in six months and they had already established three, he told the briefing.
Among other matters covered at the briefing, Mr. Dixon said there was a large quantity of counterfeit money – $100 US and CI bills – on the streets and he asked the public to be on their guard.
