Minister lauds heavy cake company

One local Caymanian woman with a taste for heavy cake, the traditional island dessert, has turned her passion into what she believes will become a successful business.

Now Minister for Tourism, Environment, Investment and Commerce, Mr. Charles Clifford has had the opportunity to taste the flavourful fare and is impressed, not only by the product, but also by the entrepreneurial spirit of this equally home-grown company.

‘The Heavy Cake Company demonstrates the undercurrent of entrepreneurialism in Cayman,’ said Mr. Clifford. ‘Every aspect of this venture was either created or produced locally and most importantly, the owner incorporated the traditions behind the product.’

The company began launching its wares on 17 September at Foster’s Food Fair at The Strand shopping plaza where customers received free samples. Hurley’s Marketplace and Kirk Supermarket are also arranging their tasting dates.

‘We are very excited about this product,’ said owner Vanessa Gilman who hails from West Bay. ‘I always had an interest in starting a business and when it came down to it, I thought what better way than to incorporate one of my favourite desserts! These cakes are traditional and any Caymanian around the globe will recognize that this is a true taste of Cayman. Heavy Cake Company’s mission is to bring our residents and visitors top quality Caymanian desserts, enticingly packaged and ready-to-eat.’
