Driver pleads to double fatality

Jerome Earle Bodden, 22, pleaded guilty on Friday to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

The deceased are Iliana Isabel De La Cruz and Angelo Alfonso Luciano.

The dangerous driving occurred along Shamrock Road on 11 March 2006.

Because Bodden was in a wheelchair, Defence Attorney Ben Tonner asked that the Grand Court judge take his pleas in a downstairs courtroom. Court One, usually used for Grand Court hearings, is on the second floor of the Law Courts Building, which has no elevator.

After a brief recess Justice Smith resumed the morning’s list in Court Four, on the ground floor of the Kirk Building.

Bodden then entered his pleas and Mr. Tonner asked for an adjournment. He said it would take time to gather material, particularly medical reports, in order to speak on Bodden’s behalf.

No details were given about the incident leading to the charges. Sentencing was adjourned until 18 May and Bodden’s bail was extended until then.

Police reports after the incident described Ms De La Cruz as a passenger in the vehicle driven by Bodden. A former Miss Teen, she was 18.

Mr. Luciano, a passenger in the back of a truck, was 22.
