The 2007 Brac Jackpot Fishing Tournament is fast approaching and with the support of District Administration, Cayman Airways, Sister Islands Tourism Association and other private sector partners it’s one of the most anticipated angling events of the year. The annual tournament takes place during the Discovery Day weekend.
This year’s Brac Jackpot features some big name participants joining local anglers who’ll be vying for the grand prize of US$4000. Although not eligible to win the prize money, three National Football League (NFL) players will be taking part: Amani Toomer (New York Giants’ wide receiver), Brandon Jacobs (New York Giants running back) and Wes Welker (New England Patriots wide receiver). During their visit to the Cayman Islands in particular Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, the players will take the opportunity to explore the islands crystal blue waters, interact with the locals, sample its delicious delicacies, tour the island and discover its unique charm.
The Cayman Brac Jackpot Fishing Tournament started to compliment what was known as Million Dollar Month (June) Fishing Tournament being held in the Cayman Islands which has evolved to become what is now known as the Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament. In June 1989 a committee was formed and the Brac tournament was launched. One of its records has continued to stand for many years – a Blue Marlin weighing 442lbs. Anglers are allowed to fish in the waters surrounding all three Cayman Islands. Other notable names affiliated with the organization on Cayman Brac are Wes Verges, D. Steve Bodden and Capt. Lawford Tatum.
The tournament will run from May 18-20 with registration taking place on May 17th at the Captain’s Table. IGFA rules apply. For further information on rules, registration, prizes, or the tournament in general, contact Kenny Ryan at 925-3844.
