Cayman hosts Special Olympics mini-conference

Special Olympics Cayman Islands (SOCI) in conjunction with members of the Local Law

Enforcement Torch Run Committee (LETR) recently hosted executive members from the

United States and Caribbean region to discuss how the Cayman Committee can maximize their fundraising efforts.

The Law Enforcement Torch run has been in existence since 1981. At it’s most basic

level, the Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers from law enforcement

agencies such as Police, Customs, Prison, Immigration and Fire run the ‘Flame of Hope’ to the opening ceremonies of local Special Olympics competitions and National Summer or Winter games. Every two years, officers from around the world gather to carry the flame in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg in honor of games.

The Cayman Committee is gearing up for this year’s final leg event taking place in

China. PC Gabe Rabess has been nominated to represent the Cayman Islands in the event taking place in October in Shanghai.

At the meeting, topics such as fundraising, recruitment and national conferences

were discussed. Visiting executive member Grant Holle said he was pleased to be invited to meet with the Cayman Committee. ‘The efforts of committees around the world are invaluable to the Special Olympics. Generally, law enforcement officers make contact with people in bad situations. Police are called because something has happened and they need assistance. Supporting the Special Olympics gives officers a sense of achievement, that they are directly helping someone.’

Chairman of the Cayman Committee, Deputy Collector of Customs, Mr Dale Ramoon

added that the meeting was very beneficial to the committee and thanked the visitors for

attending. ‘We really appreciate hearing from members from other areas of the world and hope their visit will help promote the Torch Run here in the Cayman Islands. This year we will have many fundraising events talking place, starting with the fire truck pull, and we hope that the whole community will get on board.’
