Burglars hit GC Red Cross

Some Red Cross volunteers will be coming back from Cayman Brac this week to find their cars have been burglarised.

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers were investigating the reported break-ins, which occurred sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Cayman Islands Red Cross Programmes Manager Carolina Ferriera said five of the six vehicles parked in the back lot of the building on Huldah Avenue were broken into, but it was unclear if anything had been taken.

All of the vehicles belonged to volunteers who had left Grand Cayman on Sunday by plane and by boat to help with hurricane relief efforts on the Sister Islands.

‘It’s just obscene to think that someone did this to people who are out there trying to help others recover from the storm,’ Ms Ferriera said. ‘It’s just rude.’

Red Cross Board Chairman Peter Milburn said he was incensed when he was told of the break-ins Monday.

‘If there are people in this country that will stoop to this level…shame on them and they should be penalised to the maximum,’ Mr. Milburn said.

Mr. Milburn said it wasn’t the first time Red Cross hurricane relief efforts had been interfered with by thieves.

He said several years ago pallets loaded with boxed meals intended to be sent to Guatemala were stolen.

‘That people will take advantage of others who are trying to help those in trouble – it’s just horrible,’ he said.

Police received a call from a Red Cross staff member at around noon Monday reporting that the vehicles had been damaged. Police responded and found that windows of five vehicles had been smashed.

No arrests had been reported by press time.

Since the car owners were off island, it was not known at this time what was taken from the cars, if anything.

‘It is particularly sad that this has happened to people who have gone out of their way to volunteer and assist others,’ said RCIPS Sergeant Durk Banks. ‘It is unfortunate that there are people who will take advantage of situations like this and we have to do all we can to make things as hard as possible for them.’
