Digicel Cup sets the right tone

Football enthusiasts are in for a treat this weekend when defending champions Roma United Sports Club match up with tough Elite.

It’s the first stage of the Cayman Islands Football Association Digicel Cup Knock-Out competition on Sunday at the Ed Bush Stadium, in West Bay at 7pm.

The draw was done last week at the new Camana Bay Digicel Store by Head of Marketing Casandra Harris and Vice President of CIFA David Frederick.

Harris said: ‘Digicel is pleased to announce the start of the Digicel Cup 2008 after significant planning and investment in the development of the program.

‘Football is representative of the Cayman Islands passion for sports and the talent that lies in its people.

‘The Digicel Cup creates the catalyst for changing the lives of Caymanian youth through friendly competition, social interaction and international exposure. Digicel takes pride in its fundamental principle of being a Caribbean company for the development of Caribbean people. Digicel, Life, Passion, Football.’

In the opening game at the same venue Scholars International faces Sunset FC at 5pm. At the Annex Tigers faces George Town at 5pm and at 7pm Latinos FC encounters Future SC.

Meanwhile Jeffrey Webb President of CIFA commended Digicel on their tremendous and constant support of sports especially football adding that the relationship with Digicel is a cut above the rest.

He said: ‘CIFA’s relationship with Digicel over the years has been remarkable. It is sponsors of this category that makes a difference in developing football in the Cayman Islands. We anticipate a great season and trust that this relationship gets better as we go forward in 2009.’

The game between Roma and Elite will be the most crucial as Roma is at the bottom of the table of the CIFA Premier League competition with one point whereas Elite table toppers with 13 points.

In their last outing Elite had the better of Roma 2-1 in a zealously contested game.

Can Wayne ‘Bigga’ Smith pull it off again for Roma getting past the maturing defensive midfielder Dave McLaughlin and defenders Abijah Rivers and Benjamin Cupid?

All eight Premier teams are participating in this season’s competition.
