On a gorgeous day at Governor’s Beach over the weekend, the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association held its 3rd annual Beach Bash 4-on-4 tournament. On the men’s side, eight teams battled under the sun in a round robin style tournament.
The semi-final match-up pitted Selkirk’s Hammerheads Sharks against the Island Guys and the Aqua Beach Bums against the Sand Soldiers.
The Sharks easily beat the Island Guys to advance to the final, where they would face the Sand Soldiers, who outplayed a clearly superior but exhausted Aqua Beach team.
As the spectators cheered on from underneath the Red Bull tent with a sunset backdrop, the final was a thriller.
In the end Sand Soldiers would emerge victorious in double overtime. After throwing the game winning touchdown pass, Luigi Moxam was quoted as saying, ‘Bless. Register to vote!’ as he held up the tournament trophy.
Rhys Ebanks was unavailable for comment.
On the women’s side, Ali Amos pitched a touchdown pass to receiver Michelle McTaggart in the final minute to bring her team back from a 6-0 deficit to make the Zulu Warriors the first ever women’s Beach Bash winners.
McTaggart also caught the game winning extra point to seal the victory against the Hammerhead’s Lady Pirates.
Amos and McTaggart who are not just team-mates but are also friends celebrated with the trophy after the game and vowed to defend their title at the next beach tournament.
CIFFA returns to action with a shootout tournament to be held next month and a co-ed league beginning in March.
