The Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon, four-person relay and Kids Fun Run takes place on Sunday and organisers are letting walkers know that they are welcome to participate in the race.
The race route is officially open for six hours to accommodate the runners doing the full marathon (26.2 miles), making it possible for those doing the half marathon (13.1 miles) to complete their race at pretty much any pace they feel comfortable.
‘We love having the walkers with us for the Half-Marathon,’ said Rhonda Kelly, Race Director. ‘Not only do they add to the enjoyment of the race but it’s also nice to see them along the route. They keep the course populated, which is great for a small race across such a long course.’
Merrell McCann has walked the half marathon for the past two years and keeps coming back. She originally started out as a volunteer for the event but soon the walking bug hit.
When she first started doing the half marathon, McCann trained with Laura Ribbins at Fitness Connection. She admits that her training has not been as intense this year but she does yoga and Pilates which she says balances the mind and body.
McCann said: ‘Normally I get out for walks twice weekly but I’m doing more leading up to the big day. I also go to the gym twice a week.
‘I usually set a personal goal to do the walk in four hours, and try not to go over that time. I also try to train to the best of my ability and not overdo it.’
This 53-year old mother of one says that it is her desire to always be in tip-top shape and optimum health, and she likes the half marathon walk because it motivates and inspires her to accomplish bigger and better things.
McCann recommends anyone considering taking part to go at their own pace, enjoying the walk and properly warm up, cool down and stretch. She also encourages people to take up yoga because of the benefits to both mind and body.
